Coco Chanel: A Brief History

Listed as one of the 100 most influential people from the 20th century, Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel (more widely known as Coco Chanel) has always been a favorite of mine.

Chanel was raised in an orphanage, where she was taught to sew and also had brief career as a singer before opening her first clothes shop in 1910 that firstly sold hats.

In the 20's, she launched her first perfume- Chanel No.5, whilst also intruding the Chanel suit and the classic little black dress, which remains even to this day a must-have to every girls wardrobe. She was nicknamed 'Coco' and some say that the name comes from one of the songs she used to sing, and Chanel herself said that it was a “shortened version of cocotte, the French word for ‘kept woman” as she was French.

The international depression of the 1930s had a reacted negatively on her company, but it was the outbreak of World War II that led Chanel to close her business. When she was 70, Chanel made a triumphant return to the fashion world. She first received great reviews from critics, but her feminine and easy-fitting designs soon won over shoppers around the world.
