Andreja- formerly Andrej- Pejic, aged 22 went public about
her choice of having a sex reassignment surgery on Wednesday.
She was first noticed as a teenager when working in
McDonalds, and was then scouted by a modelling agency.
But as you can see this was just the beginning,
for it led onto her starring in David Bowie’s music video “The Stars (Are Out
Tonight)” and is currently represented by Storm, who also represents Cara
Delevingne and Kate Moss.
Until recently she was known for modelling both womenwear
and menswear on runways; as well as appearing on the front
covers of famous magazines such as ‘Elle’ and ‘New York’.
However her decision
on Wednesday therefore suggested that going forward would mean that she would
only be modelling women’s fashion from now on.
In 2011 Pejic walked for Jean-Paul Gaultier in his women's show during Paris Fashion Week |
‘I figured out who I
was very early on - actually, at the age of 13, with the help of the internet -
so I knew that a transition, becoming a woman, was always something I needed to
do,’ Andreja expressed to Style.com
‘But it wasn’t
possible at the time, and I put it off, and androgyny became a way of
expressing my femininity without having to explain myself to people too much.’
‘To all trans youth out there, I would like to say respect
yourself and be proud of who you are. All human beings deserve equal treatment
no matter their gender identity or sexuality.
'To be perceived as what you say you are is a basic human
right,’ the Serbian-born model said in a statement released via GLAAD
